Title: Looking for books
Post by: c00kietime on May 25, 2008, 06:51:46 PM
Hi I have been looking around bookstores for different books on different religions. I would like to learn about them all. I'm not too sure which books I should believe or not so I ask for book suggestions from people with experience. please?   :)
                               Thank you,
                                        Julia

Are there any particular religions you are interested in first?
Give us a place to start. :)

Well its between Buddhism and Paganism right now. Both interest me equally. Hard to choose which to research first.

... Paganism isn't a religion. It's an umbrella term to encompass several. Which Pagan religion are you after?

Well I knew that paganism wasn't a religion.  I had meant that I want to learn about all the religions that fall under it.

Try Which Witch is Which? (http://www.amazon.com/Which-Witch-Whick-Telesco-Patricia/dp/B000WS53PC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1211770786&sr=8-4) by Telesco.

There is also Pagan Paths (http://www.amazon.com/Pagan-Paths-Druidry-Shamanism-Practices/dp/0712611061/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211770851&sr=8-1) by Jennings ... it's concise and not a bad read.

Buddhism for Beginners by Thubten Chodron is a good place to start with Buddhism I believe. It's what I first read when exploring the religion and I thought it was helpful and easy to understand.

I have delayed in answering because I wanted to try and think of one book that would not only explain the basic precepts of Buddhism but also talk about the different sects.
I went through my bookshelves without luck, I'm afraid.

I do have some links to sites on the internet that might help.

http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/qanda01.htm

http://www.religionfacts.com/buddhism/sects.htm

I hope this gives you some of the answers you are looking for.

Good luck. :)

I'm with Poppy on this one, while I've studied it in the past, I don't currently own any books on Buddhism.

As for Paganism. There are several authors that could be recommended, depending on which point of view you want to start with. Here's a few that top my list;

Patricia Telesco

StarHawk

Scott Cunningham

DJ Conway

Edain McCoy

Hope it helps. there are a few others that "blur" the lines between paganism and ceramonial magic. But this list might get you started.
