Title: Old Wives Tales
Post by: Melissa on February 20, 2008, 07:18:42 PM
While talking to TwistedIllusion, I came up with this topic.
What's some of your favorite old wives tales you've heard?

For example one that I've always heard is, if your palm itches, it means you will be coming into some money soon.

If your ears itch it means someone is talking about you.

No fair you took mine  :ohmy
Now I must think of another one. Ok, putting a penny in your loafers is supposed to bring you good luck. I still see people doing it today.

Turning your shirt inside out will repel the "evil eye". Or sleeping with lavender under your pillow will help you dream of the one you will marry.

Don't get me started. "old wives tales" are a hobby. I've got books full of them! LOL

Ok. Here's one. My grandmother used to tell me that if you took a hair from a horses tail and let it sit in rain water it would turn into a worm. She truly believed it too.

If you rub a wart with a slice of potato and then bury the potato the wart will dissolve as the potato does.  ???

Yeah, if it's your left palm... an itching right palm means you will be spending money.

Sneezing three times in a row supposedly indicates that someone hates you.

Sneezing cats promise rain and is a good omen but if it sneezes three times the household will suffer colds.  :eek3

Step on a crack, and you'll break your mother's back.  :P I just had to say it.

To see a butterfly at night  means an approaching death

-how you would see such a tiny thing in the night, I have no idea.

If a wild bird gets in your house it means someone in the house is going to die.

Ever see that commercial for Lunesta, with the radioactive green glowing butterfly? That's how you'll see it, and when you do, RUN!

That moth is pretty!

A horseshoe, hung above the doorway, will bring good luck to a home.  (a few of my family members do that)

Burying a sword or axe under your front door will keep unwanted guests away. ( Old Norse custom).

This is a wierd one for women

When washing dishes, if your shirt gets wet, your husband will be lazy.

My ex's mother and aunts told me that one.

US superstition regards the two dollar bill as unlucky to the holder, particularly if won in through gambling.

A cricket in the house brings good luck and must not be harmed, same for ladybugs.
A toad in the garden insures a good harvest.
Killing a spider is bad luck.
Wearing amber protects against illness and the evil eye.
If you say "white rabbit" three times at the full moon, by next full moon you will receive a surprise or a gift.

Wow, my family had more superstitions than I realized.
