Religious intolerance in Canada
Toronto-2008: Religious bigotry at a beauty pageant

"Overview:

Organizers of the Miss Toronto Tourism pageant for 2008 invited Stephanie Conover, 23, (Miss Canada Plus 2007) to be one of their judges. In an unusual show of religious bigotry, they later decided that she was unfit to serve as a judge because of her hobbies. Director of the Miss Toronto Tourism pageant notes that hers is a private organization, receives no government funds and thus can discriminate on any grounds that they wish. Public reaction to their decision was intensely negative.

Ms Connors is the first known beauty queen who is openly Neopagan ."

Wait until you see her hobbies-the ones they supposedly object to. Sad

Stuff like this really bothers me, I know my country isn't too bad when it comes to Religious intolerance but there are examples like this which prove that we have much  father to go. You can see this trend in my island, which is 99% Christian, most people here are actually very tolerant of other peoples beliefs but there is a whole other sector of people who feel that other religions are... "wrong" and feel the need to look down and belittle them. I feel very bad for this woman, and lost a lot of respect for a country which claims to be so respectful of others beliefs.

Hun..this happens everywhere unfortunately. I don't see it as a reflection of your country, just a reflection of a mindset that is way to prevalent right now.  There are no boundaries on the stupidity of some people. They are found absolutely everywhere.
I could tell you a lot of stories about this country too.
Very sad.

Well if that's the case I'm going straight to hell, no passing GO, no collecting 200 dollars.  If Wicca can be recognized by the Canadian Forces as a religion, I think that these closed minded ignorant jerks can put a rubber band around their respective heads and snap out of it.

At least I know I'll have company.  Considering some of my hobbies I'll probably be meeting you at the door to take your coat. LOL

It is sad that this day and age they are still dumb.  If these people would just take the time and see what its all about, they would see how foolish they are.  We have computers and stuff, all they have to do is read about it.  It makes me so mad.

Yes most people today do own computers and laptops, but they get so wrapped up in other things society throws at them, they forget to enlighten themselves once in a while. I don't really want to use this, but a good example would be my mom. She owns a computer, but only really uses it to check and send email, buy tickets to go somewhere, or maybe look something up for work. Other than that she is clueless to what you can really learn from the internet.

Yes it is sad, but not the only thing discriminatory going on right now. Just turn on your tv and watch the news about...um...that man and woman trying to convince you they should be the next....Well you get the idea. (I'm trying to keep this nonpolitical) Wink

Pack your bags kids, we're going to Hell!  Evil

Can I get an "AMEN" in the House LOL

I have to agree with you Melissa - her "hobbies"

The Western World or good ol' USA teachings are troublesome.
The only time I add these type of things to my 'hobby list' is when I have no other choice on an online profile.

For me, this is part of one's beliefs/spirituality/philosophy and not a 'hobby' at all.

Sadly, the US even adds Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism etc... as a Religious Belief when in fact they are Philosophies and NOT a Religion.

The Western World is full of misleading information from Buddhism to Vampirism to Paganism. I do know there is a movement to educate the USA on these things but it's a slow process...

Agreed with the Undead_Elf again: "Yes most people today do own computers and laptops, but they get so wrapped up in other things society throws at them, they forget to enlighten themselves once in a while."

How true... some do not know where to begin or even think about doing this. There is so much REAL information right at one's fingertips if one chooses to enlighten themselves... most will not.
