While on my travels throughout the VC, one question always comes up on vampire forums.

How many people have light sensitivity problems? This can mean sensitivity to the sun, or it could mean any type of direct light.
Do you think light sensitivity has anything to do with vampirism or do you think sometimes people try and link it to vampirism, because of the myths of sunlight and the mythical vampire?

Thoughts? Are you sensitive to light? Even though, it's not really genetic, when I say genetic, I'm referring to being fair/light skinned or some other genetic reason.

I am very light sensitive but it is due to medications and health issues that I have.  My eyes are especially light sensitive.

I have the same problem as well. The light bothers my eyes so I don't like to go out too much. Tends to burn a little and I shy away from it. I have had my eyes check and what not and they say my eyes are fine. Meds are not the issue either, but I could never figure out why.

I do not consider myself vampyric, but I myself tend to have similar issues with a lot of light.  We are guessing though that it might be something on the spectrum of Asperger's Syndrome.  I am going to take a test on this in a few weeks to confirm it.

I have some sensitivity to light, though problems arise mainly when I'm low-energy and off balance. In that way, I think it does tie in with vampirism.

Very light sensitive. Natural.

I have to wear dark sunshades in the sun. I wear a prescription but have them tented very dark.

I have nighttime driving glasses too.... they are with a slight tent [enough to see in the dark but keeps the lights from other cars and street lamps from hurting my eyes].

In the house, I rarely turn on lights - if I do, it's  a lamp with the lowest watts I can get too see clearly... usually about 15 to 25 amps.

I have always been very "photo-sensitive". Though there is a medical reason for this. Most people are born with a natural UV shield built into their corneas. I was not. I have been to several ophthalmologists. And although they find it fascinating, they cannot seem to find a reason for it. They suspect that it goes along with the Heterochromia. (My eyes are different colors). Though my father and several of my siblings suffer the same affliction. Without the color variances.

My eyes are very sensitive to both sunlight and the light from vehicles at night.
Years ago I was told that I had astigmatisms in both eyes and this would cause sensitivity to bright light. So I don't consider it to be related to vampirism.
Also, being fair skinned I have issues with the sun. I love the warmth but at the same time I tend to burn. So between both problems I just stay in the shade.

I've always seemed to enjoy when it is darker outside. Rainy days, and when all the lights are out besides a few candles. For me it is just a preference I've attained throughout the years. -shrug- But I am anemic so I am quite pale.   Roll Eyes

Where Am I?

I suffer from some forms of light sensitivity, I share this in common with my mother. We share a disorder which causes bright lights to damage the eye very easily, fatty tissues build up in these areas and with TONS and TONS of exposure over time visual problems can come up. These problems make me nearly blind in the  morning sun, even in indirect light, it seems brighter to me.

My father also has a condition which causes him to have blindness at dawn and dusk without special sunglasses.

This is why I prefer the dark, my room is painted black and the blind always down, just because I find light hard on my eyes.

*nods* I keep my blinds closed all the time. People always complain it's too dark in my apartment, but I can see in here just fine.

All my biological siblings have really pale skin and light eyes, but I'm the only one whose eyes can't stand much light 24/7. I have a pair of glasses and a pair of really dark tinted sunglasses, which I most likely wear more often.

If it's because of vampirism I can't say. Does seem so, since I never had this much of a problem before Awakening.

My original thoughts on Light Sensitivity were that it had very little to do with vampirism and more to do with environmental influence. Some of you supported my original thought saying you don't have lights on and always wear sunglasses. So I thought (seeing as I also tend to be in the dark more than the light) it could just be my eyes were not used to being in the light and that could be why being in, even dim sunlight, hurt my eyes.

I have come to a new conclusion though. I have been spending more time in the light. If my original thoughts where true, the pain of being in the light would fade from constantly being in the light, when actually the pain got worse. So there could be a possible link to vampires and light sensitivity. Of course I'm not declaring it fact and I still think some of it could be environmental.

I have a theory on why some vampires have a problem with sunlight.  For myself my tend to be sensitive to sunlight even on completely overcast days.  Also being out in the sun usually makes me feel sick, though I normally do not burn.

Anyway, here my theory:  Some things that I have read about vampires is that with some when someone tries to view their aura it like a void or black hole.  Well black holes pull in energy, even light.  Well sunlight/ sun energy can be very strong and harsh.  I think that for some vampires it is too strong and also not very compatible to their energy system.  So the result is that it makes them sensitive to it and for some even makes them sick.

Just my 2 cents.  Let me know what you all think.

That may have something to do with the UV rays. UV rays are even present on over cast or very cloudy days.

The sun usually bothers my eyes when I am low on energy and my skin gets all tingly when in the sunlight. It gives me the sensation that a bunch of needles are poking me lightly. It gets very irritating. So, I hide inside most of the time or in the shade.

This theory sounds very good, however I can't test it myself. No matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to see my own aura. I can easily see the aura of others but I just can't see mine... It's very frustrating  Cry

I am who I am...

« Reply #18 on: September 27, 2008, 01:32:23 PM »

I think this is a chicken or egg thing...

Light sensitivity does tend to go hand-in-hand with vampirism.

While there's a lot of myth surrounding this, there does seem to be a lot of fact backing it up as well.  Vampires tend to be light sensitive.  Is it because they're vampires or is it just that light sensitivity is more common in vampires than the general population?

It's hard to say.  The world may never know for sure.

I am very light sensitive.  I'm finding that as I get older it's becoming worse and worse.  I have a 'normal' day time life and so I just sort of live with it.  The biggest obstacle for me right now...is that as my light sensitivity gets worse, my loved one's patience in it gets worse.  I don't like to go to family reunions or BBQs in the dense summer heat because I always get so sick.  I end up having to go inside and lay about feeling drained and nauseas.  I'm seen as rude, standoffish or just plain b.itchy.  It's like I can't make them understand how horrible direct sunlight really makes me feel.  I wear blue blockers as much as I possibly can and I get eyes rolled at me.  "It's not THAT bright out!"  People huff at me...And trying to explain the intense pain and headaches the bright light gives me is just a lost cause I think...

Just another reason to get dragged down into loneliness if we let it get to us though.   Tongue

Just a little tid-bit...vitamin D is synthesized through the skin from contact with sunlight.  People who do not get much sun exposure because of light sensitivity can get deficiencies in vitamin D.  Vitamin D is a big proponent to stave off depression.  It's not a bad idea to take vitamin D supplements.  Doctor's recommend 1000 units of vitamin D a day.  I swear by my vitamin D...
