I view it as a tactic. Like Raph. He is not truly close to his enemies. I would dare say he feels closer to some people on this site then those who he deals with. But it is a necessity  to have the upper hand on the bad guys. And it is an effective tactic. I used it while doing union work.

If it's at my work place, then yes, I'd keep my enemies closer, but if it's in everyday life, my enemies can go to hell.  Evil

I have used the phrase frequently over my life.
The world I was raised in was an extremely dangerous one. I was raised with the concept practically from the time I could talk, just as I was raised with looking in the store windows to see who was behind you and in store display cases for the same reason.

This doesn't mean being friends with them (true friends are few and far between).

I would rather see the rat in the room than have it hidden. Much less dangerous. Wink

I guess it would all depend on who your enemies are and how often you have to deal with them. I feel it would make sense for some but not others, depending on the situation.

For me, I would want my enemies out of my life. I don't think I would have the time or patience to keep them close. If I had someone at work that was pissing me off and being that much of a pain that I would consider them an enemy, I would honestly quit and find another job. Like I said, that's just me and my situation. I'm the type of person who avoids confrontations. The less stress in my life the better. I feel what goes around comes around, it all works itself out in the end one way or another.

Do you agree with this saying? Have you ever used this saying in your own life?
Please explain.

You know, I was thinking about this for a couple of days now, and it's interesting that I run into this topic while browsing these forums. I think that while enemies are those who, most likely in all sense of the word, wish you every bit of harm, sometimes it does help to keep them closer to you more than your friends. I think it's because, knowing they are the enemy, keeping them close by makes you aware of their every move...so you aren't taken by surprize. Kinda like Jesus and Judas; Jesus kept him pretty much by his side, because he knew Judas would betray him.

I would agree with Kitty on this one.  If I have people I don't like to much, I just don't talk to them or be around them.  I don't have the time or energy to worry about their every move.  When you keep them closer to you, your asking for drama and letting them get to you.  When you leave things alone and get them out, they are not even on your mind and you move on to better things.  Thats what I think anyways.
