Hey everyone. I am working a case and the home owner is Buddhist. I would like to get back up to speed on Buddhism as I have forgotten most of what I know. Anything will help, even the basics. Also I am just interested in learning about all belief systems. But as far as the case goes, I like to be sensitive to the home owners beliefs, and a working knowledge helps in that regard. And it can actually help with the case. Thanks.

Here you go: http://buddhism.about.com/

Here you`d find some basics on Buddhism.

There are also these so called "dummie guides" on all world religions, but I forgot the complete name. I`ll add that later.

Kind regards,
Wilhelm

There are many types of Buddhism. Can you give me a better idea as to which they practice?

Those are all basic. There are a great many differences between Buddhism as practised in Tibet as opposed to Japan, or Thailand.

I don't know which type they practice. I guess I will try to get the basics on all of them.

A lot of the differences are surface. The main precepts are the same, but things like ceremonies and whether they eat meat or not is largely by area.

For instance: The Tibetan eat meat, but do not kill it. Some refuse to eat meat at all.
Tibetan has a very strong tradition of ceremony and emphasizes many separate Gods and Goddesses.Zen does not. Zen is more a philosophy of living and finding enlightenment for oneself.

It's sort of like comparing a Catholic to a Baptist. Same basis (Jesus) but a LOT of differences culturally.

If I can help let me know, ok buddy?

One thing to keep in mind about Buddhism, as already stated, is its many branches.  The two 'core branches', as I call them, are Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism.  Theravada, theoretically, take on a philosophical as opposed to religious approach, which Mahayana takes on.  Some traditions are a mixture of both.

I can totally understand cultural sensitivity, though.  I am not an expert in Buddhism, but some things to probably keep in mind is to observe how they act, and look at what they eat.  If it seems they will eat meat, then that means they probably are of the branches who do not believe in refusing anything given to them.

One thing to consider is their ethnicity.  There might be a chance that they belong to a Buddhist tradition from the place their ancestors came from.  If you know their ethnicity, you might be able to do some web searching on their branch of Buddhism.

It is just some ideas.

Sincerely,

Thanks guys. This info helps a lot.

The family is caucasian. I don't they were raised Buddhist. I believe it is a path they have chosen.

I did see small altar with a Buddha with some crystals and candles on it. This is were they meditate. But they were ok with us being in that space and taking photo and video of it.

Good to hear everything is working out. Most Buddhists tend to be very easy going, with the odd one not being at all.
