I got a feeling this is going to be a very good movie!!  Smiley

Let’s be honest: vampires are cool, and Johnny Depp is awesome, so the idea that Depp wants to create a vampire movie is… well, coo-awesome. Okay, maybe we’re not breaking ground with new vocabulary here, but neither is Depp with his vampire project – a big screen adaptation of the 1960s supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows.

While Depp is helping produce the Dark Shadows movie along with Graham King and Warner Brothers, nothing else about the project was known, until now. Our friends over at IESB picked up a scoop on a few names set up to write and direct the movie adaptation.

The director isn’t that far of a stretch if you know anything about Depp. In fact, it’s pretty much what we’ve been assuming all along if the rumor is true. If it’s a Johnny Depp flick and it’s even somewhat supernatural or gothic, then Tim Burton must be at the helm. Not that I’m complaining. When you have an incredible team like Burton and Depp who can continue making movies together without it feeling like the same flick rehashed a dozen times, I say keep making movies!

The rumor for the film’s screenwriter is a little more of a concern for me. Writer John August has worked with Burton three times before. He wrote Big Fish which I loved, but also Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which disappointed me and Corpse Bride which I was pretty neutral on. I’ll have to revisit those later two and see if it was the execution of the picture that disappointed me or if they were problems that started at the script level. Regardless, August is the rumored scribe behind Dark Shadows.

The news actually comes through a whole other project. IESB’s Robert Sanchez was talking with Peter Segal about his upcoming flick Get Smart and asked about his next project, Shazam, which August is writing. Segal let it slip that August was bouncing back between Shazam and Burton’s Dark Shadows. I guess that means there’s some room for a misunderstanding if anyone wants to deny what was said, but this sounds pretty darn logical to me.

Still no word as to whether Depp himself will appear in the project or not, although it seems pretty likely if Burton is directing.

I had heard a rumor that Johnny would be playing Barnabus Collins.
I can't wait to see the movie, whether he's in it or not.  (I would be even more excited if he was).

Well, being one who actually watched some of the original broadcast series when I was a wee little one, its the case that I've been following this series since it was in its original run. With the coaxing of some friends I've been watching all the DVD Collections again and finally I just ordered the last DVD Collection #26 just the other day to complete my collection. Its been fantastic to watch all of these again.

That said, I tend to be rather a purist where Shadows is concerned and when I heard that Johnny Depp was taking it on I got excited. That is until I've heard the Burton news. Look I mean no offense to anyone who is a Burton fan truly for I love his works also, but at times, he doesn't exactly have a good track record in remakes of original classics when its looked at from a fan purists perspective of what came before. Planet of the Apes was a disaster from a number of perspectives for fans of that film genre, I was one of them, and I have the greatest fear that Dark Shadows could easily become a Burton-ized musical that to this deeply devoted Dark Shadows fan would make me both cringe and mourn. I have all the faith in Depp and his masterful acting skills to create the angst character of Barnabas to a genius level as Jonathan Frid did. The rest as far as screenplay writing and Directing and overall gothic mood, well, I'll have to keep my fingers crossed and pray for good results.

Upon the original news of its pre-production I hoped for a wonderful renewed version of the New England styled Euro-Victorian feel to Dark Shadows again that so many have come to love. As the original did in so many ways, I thought it might again renew the whole gothic Vampire stylish genre that seems to have been lost in many respects. I will remain hopeful however.

Peace>

I am absolutely thrilled to hear that Johnny Depp would do this.

I also grew up watching the original, though in syndication Wink, as well as the 80's remake with Ben Cross.

I am sure that Johnny is quite capable of taking on the role, but I also have misgivings about Burton. This story does not require the "sweeping" changes he felt the need in the past to make to other classics. (As you mentioned with Planets of the Apes.)

I guess it will be a waiting game until somebody "leaks" a preview or some production stills. *sighs*

Don't know if my heart is ready to see Johnny Depp in that cape though. Wink
