If you were a girl of a faintly goth leaning in the '90s – but the unthreatening type who doesn't wear neck spikes and stuff – then you are probably familiar with Emily The Strange. The glum looking girl was created by Rob Reger to grace many a bag and black t-shirt in that decade, and later went on to appear in a number of comic book adventures. After a stalled 2005 attempt by 20th Century Fox to bring her animated adventures to screens, she's now being resurrected.

For those who don't know her, Emily is a morose looking girl of thirteen, with long dark hair and pale skin. Basically, she could easily find work in the Japanese horror movie industry. Her outlook on the world is less than optimistic and her main friends in life are her four cats.

The new movie version, which may be live-action, animated or both, will be produced by Mike Richardson (producer on Hellboy II and also president of Dark Horse Comics, who publish the Emily series), and will be based on an upcoming Emily novel that will be published next year. New characters in the film will include Earwig, Umlaut, McFreeley and Officer Summers.

With the right director and writer this could probably work well. It could potentially be something akin to Ghost World, but starring Wednesday Addams. If they choose to go live-action they'll need a very talented young actress who can be sardonic without being annoying. We'd suggest the use of Fairuza Balk and a time machine.

I love Fairuza Balk. Too bad she is too old for Emily. I can't wait to see what they come up with.
