This took place in India

Believed to perform witchcraft, a family of four were stoned and then buried alive by their neighbours in a village in Assam.

Now every male member of the village is absconding and what was shocking was that women of the village justified the killing.

Amrita Majhi, wife of one of the victim has delivered a baby boy and was spared from the punishment because she was pregnant.

''I was inside but could hear that people of the village stoned them to death,'' said Amrita Majhi.

Hours later Koilajuli an Adivasi village on the Assam Arunachal border wears a desolate look.

''Yes we killed, they had to be killed they were witches,'' said Sashi, Amrita's relative who was involved in the killing.

A year ago, five of a family in the same area were brutally killed for the same reason.

''I have been doing research on witchcraft for several years, basic cause is lack of modern health care system in those areas. When they fall ill they go to quacks, and quacks normally give herbal medicines which consists of toxic substances and people start hallucinating and they think the person is under some magic spell. So they start killing the quacks, such kind of problem should be tackled with economic upliftment and social development,'' said Kula Saikia, IGP.

Three persons have been arrested this time but the belief and superstition runs so deep that it requires much greater effort to educate these people.

Endure, be the outcast, make the choice that no one else will. Make sure it's the right choice and don't give in.

Unfortunately it is more common than we would like to believe.
