(That title made me giggle!)

The Highland practice of using witchcraft to protect or harm cattle during the 17th and 18th Centuries is to be discussed in a lecture.

Called Charmed Cows and Contentious Neighbours, it is one of four being hosted by Inverness-based educational institute UHI later this month.

It will be given by Dr Karen Cullen, programme leader of UHI's undergraduate honours Scottish history degree.

Other lectures will look at the Vikings and Scots in Russia and Poland.

Dr Cullen said: "I will be talking about low-level or everyday witchcraft and superstition, focusing on the extent to which magic was employed to safeguard cattle.

"Cows were a particularly precious commodity in upland regions, and tensions broke out between neighbours when black magic was suspected to have played a role in harming the animals."

Dr Cullen's lecture will be followed by Prof Paul Dukes on Scots in Russia, Dr David Worthington on Scots in early modern Poland and archaeologist Prof Chris Morris on the Vikings and their relationship with Christians in Britain and the North Atlantic region.

LOL I know I thought something similar as well.
It doesn't sound like they are going to get into the whole sacred cow Buddhism discussion. It's too bad these lectures like this are not here in the states, I'd probably go to a lot of them. This does sound quite interesting. But I'm always interested in the history of that area, because my hertiage is Anglo Saxon, Welsh, Irish, and probably Scottish..

I agree, it's rather frustrating that there really are no professors wanting to discuss such topics.. I'm Irish, Dutch, and Scottish and I don't know too much about the background besides Celts.. and Druids. And Booze. Smiley

Although booze is an important part of pre-Christian Dutch culture, there is more out there.  Laughing

There has been extensive research on our history, mostly because we grow tired of being mistaken for Germans. Laughing

I find it really frustrating finding any information on the Scottish on TV at least, I'm always looking for stuff to watch on The History Channel, History International or National Geographic. It's like they always show something on England and Ireland, but Scotland, nope!

Since the Vikings were mentioned in this article, there was a documentary on the Vikings the other night on one of those channels, but it was during a time that I was too busy to actually sit down and watch all of it.

Oh and booze, I always think of the Irish when I think of booze! lol

My maternal grandparents came to the states from Scotland, and my wife and I are making a point of saving up and going there in the hopefully near future. When I'm not out hill walking I'll be firmly ensconced in a library in Glasgow.  Wink

We'll be taking lots of pictures, although they will be gray soggy ones since we'll be traveling in late winter or early spring. I hate getting rained on but it's the MOTHERLAND for Gods' sakes.  Laughing

What a cool trip. I'm jealous.

Leica sells a nice point and shoot camera over in that part of the world that is weather sealed due to the constant moist weather conditions. It is also drop proof to 5 feet. May be something you want to look into when you get there.

Well that's the sort of weather you expect from that region. I wouldn't believe my eyes if I saw a sunny photo of Scotland!  Laughing
