It seems in some circles the publisher, Llewellyn, has some bad press or opinions from various of people on the books that they publish. I've heard that most of their books are crap or their too fluffy in content. Although, I admit, I do own quite a few books that are published by Llewellyn. So, what's your opinion on them? Or they too fluffy? Or do you see more of a balance in their publishings recently?

Here's their website if you are unfamiliar with them: http://www.llewellyn.com/

I admit when I hear that a book was published by them I pause for a moment. In the past they have published a lot of fluff.
I do try and put that aside and take the individual book on it's own merits.

I haven't purchased a Llewellyn book in years. Maybe I just caught them in a cycle of ultra-fluff, I don't know. Llewelyn has gotten the reputation of putting out "101" books, which is great if you are truly new to a subject. The more in-depth books seem rare.

I'm actually drawn to very little of what I find in bookstores of late. There's wisdom to be found in many occult books out there, though it requires alot of sifting to find the good stuff, the paragraphs or chapters that are truly substantial and helpful.

Weiser tends to dish up a main course instead of just appetizers. A label worth checking out, in my opinion.

All I own from Llewellyn is a deck of Tarot cards, and they're pretty accurate when it comes to the Major Arcana stories.

They could be attempting to protect, as it were, the general public by not publishing the more serious and nitty-gritty details of occult subjects, which is good for a company outside of it's own realm. It also explains why Llewellyn publishes more "101 books"- if the public is to relearn what they've been taught about the occult (we all know that most people have an off-understanding of it at the least), then it must be done very slowly. We are dealing with the world, after all.

I've seen a few of them while browsing book stores.. but I have never felt that draw that usually finalizes my decision when it comes to purchasing a book. In other words, I have not read any thing from that publisher.

I have to agree with Odins Eyes on this one. I haven't bought one of their books in nearly 15 years. They were a big help to me in the late 80's and early 90's, when I first began studying, but quickly became almost childish. At least that's the way it felt. Once I had moved beyond the basics and into wanting to specialize or study a specific path they became obsolete.

None of the books out in the last 5 years have peaked my interest in the least. From any of the well known publishers. Maybe it's finally time to finish writing the one that's been in my desk drawer for 3 years now! LOL

Grin Just as soon as I can find the time between having a baby (due any day now), 4 other kids ages 2-6, running 7 online clothing shops, still writing and recording for my band, and the day to day of running a household of 8!
