Working overtime today on a job that requires absolutely no thought on my part because I have done it so much, I allowed my mind to wander. I didn't let it go far because it is small and gets lost easily. While it was out it wandered across some old ideas and came up with a question. When does a religion become a religion. For example, years ago during the Star Wars craze, people in several countries listed their religion as Jedi on census forms. We all know this is a fictional way of life from the movies. But what if enough people were serious about it and followed it's practices. Then in time it becomes a belief system with a lot of people following. What point does have to get to to become a religion that is taken seriously? Say like Wicca, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.

You know I am not sure on that one although I have questioned it myself... Maybe when you get enough people to go into said religion and getting the state government and who ever else to recognize it... This is one subject that I would like to be enlightened upon.

This is a quick response for now, I may go into more into detail later on about this.
In my opinion a religion actually becomes a religion when the beliefs of a religion becomes popular you have quite a few people following that religion.
However, I believe there's a fine line, like you mentioned Star Wars, I remember the same thing happening when The Lord of the Rings movies came out.
A lot of people started looking at these films in spiritual way and that's fine, if you get some spirituality from it and there's definitely a spiritual theme in both movies, however a religion? Hmm..based on fictional characters that  Tolkien and George Lucas developed, I find that pretty far fetched. Like I said, I need to come back to this thread when I have a little more time to think and my brain is less fried! lol

Endure, be the outcast, make the choice that no one else will. Make sure it's the right choice and don't give in.

Do rest your brain cells. Then give us an in depth reply as I would love to hear your thoughts. It occurred to me there is a fine line between a fantasy, a cult, and a religion. Buddhism started out with a handful of followers. And now is a major religion. The people who followed David Koresh were considered cultists. But if things had gone very differently then over time Branch Davidians could have been a major religion. It is fascinating to me how one flourishes and another fades away.

A fascinating thread, and certainly a question that gets one thinking. I remember reading a short passage by Nietzsche, where he commented on the way misfortunes had of turning into good luck tempted him to believe in God. He stated, suppress all religion for a Century, then take off the lid, and religion would grow again within a year. The view was that belief was more natural than disbelief and he thought therefore it was an easier thing for there to be some belief in something rather than a complete spiritual void providing nothingness. A view I am in line with at least to some extent. I would wonder that such effects can create widespread belief out of anything should it become adopted by enough of a society. Even Jedi-ism.

Good stuff!

I heard a saying once that applies here. And this is just me quoting, it is not meant to be demeaning to Christianity in any way. The phrase was"Christianity was the cult that made it." It has always made me think.

Yes, and in just another thought that struck me as I read;

it is said that a cult, is a cult, to those looking in from the outside, not to those looking to the outside from within. A frightening bit of thought, when one considers the implications that might hold in relative perception.
