When "Supernatural" kicks off its new season this fall, fans should expect a shake-up of the status quo, creating some treats — or tricks — for dedicated fans of the show, and a new starting place for first-time viewers.
"This is the season to join the party," creator and executive producer Eric Kripke said in an interview with SciFi Wire. "Or for fans, this is the season they’ve been waiting for. From the beginning I was always like, 'Oh, man, just let us get to season three.' Because [Seasons] 1 and 2 we set the chessboard, and in season three, really, all hell breaks loose."
With only four weeks until the Season 3 premiere, rumors have already been milling on the Internet about what upcoming episodes hold. According to Michael Ausiello of TV Guide, the show has sent out a casting call for a vampire who "habitually picks up young women in bars and 'turns' them into vampires by having them drink blood. Despite his outward cruelty and vampire super-strength, Dixon is actually a vulnerable, grief-stricken man who can't face eternity alone and is desperately trying to reconstruct a vampire family."
Perhaps the most controversial announcement is the addition of two female hunters. Lauren Cohan ("Young Alexander the Great") and Katie Cassidy ("Black Christmas") will join the show for several episodes as demon hunters and possible love interests for Sam and Dean Winchester.
Rumors have been swirling about new female demon hunters as a possible way to increase the show’s male audience. Cohan’s character, Bela, has been described as a tough-as-nails, hard drinking mercenary whose target of choice is of the supernatural persuasion, and who may serve as a love interest for the equally hardened Dean. Cassidy will portray Ruby, a dedicated, if somewhat cold, soldier in the fight against evil. By all accounts, Sam will be the target of her sexual aggression, if not affection. Expect to see Ruby in Episode 1 of Season 3, "The Magnificent Seven."
Creator Eric Kripke had remained silent amid the storm of controversy touched off by the rumors swirling on the Internet. However, once the network officially announced the new additions, he spoke out in an effort to calm the fans’ fears.
"Ruby and Bela, each in their own unique way, are dangerous, ruthless, more bad than good; and they'll each prove big trouble for Sam and Dean. We were excited to find both Katie and Lauren; they just popped off the screen for us, and they bring charisma and intelligence to their roles." Kripke told TV Guide.
While most news has centered around possible romances, Kripke insists that is not the purpose of the women.
