Okay I a wanna put this one out there for everyone to think about and then give me an answer.

Do you think there is a difference between Wicca and Witchcraft?

Absolutely.

I believe that Wiccans can be witches, but not all witches are of the Wiccan faith.  Witchcraft is a religo-magic, while Wicca itself is a religion that witches just happen to be in.  Mind you, I also do not think that magicians are the same as witches, for the former is not obligated to perform magic for a religious purpose while the latter is more religious-based, if that makes any sense.  Some witches I know do not believe in anything of the Wiccan faith other than the Neo-pagan basics found in it.

Hope this gives you some insight on my view.

Sincerely,

There were witches LONG before Wicca was even a twinkle in Gardner's eye.

Agreed.
Wicca is an attempt to recreate the old pagan religions.

There is a difference  Smiley

Wicca is a 'religion' and witchcraft is a 'craft'.  The two are not synonymous with each other, although they can be combined.

Another thing, for the sake of historical context, is that Witch was an adopted term in the early 1000's C.E.  I am not sure exactly which date, but it came -way- before the term Wicca was made, even.  Which, as noted by Goth, is a religion while the former is a craft (one I call 'religo-magick').

I would have to get some sources out since I lost many links when I reformatted my computer in the past several years, but I think the Witches' Voice website has some articles on this somewhere in their database.  I could be wrong, though.

I have found in my experience that Witchcraft is true to the history. And Wicca takes what they want from history, twists and changes it to their liking. There for making wicca a mesh of different religions, deities, etc.
(I appoligize for offending anyone with my comment. I have had VERY bad experiences with those who call themselves and practice Wicca.)

I do not mind eclecticism, and it is a common thing in Wicca from what I have read.  I am somewhat eclectic myself, though have a main 'grounding' path, as I call it.  The only thing I ever have a problem with is when one group claims to be one thing but are another thing - phony refutation is the worst way to present yourself, regardless of religion (and I am not pointing out any specifics with this comment).

I have seen some neo-Pagan authors use Wicca and Witchcraft interchangeably, and wish they would clarify the differences in their texts so that people can be less confused when introduced into the New Age and occult lore.

Actually, in many of the newer books, the authors make their statements as to how they view the difference between Wicca and Witchcraft in the prefaces.    Many authors are straight wiccan.  Others, such as Christopher Penzack with his Temple series, are Witchcraft more than Wicca.

And even most of the Witchcraft that we have access to is neo.

And before anybody gets up in arms, the term neo-  when applied to a word, means that it's new.   So most wicca and Pagan practices of today are Neo-Wicca and Neo-pagan.  And the same can be said, Neo-Witchcraft.

Besides, just because something is new doesn't make it wrong.   Who says you need hundreds of years behind something to make it legitimate?  If it feels right in your heart, then it's right for you.

"Wicca" is the name of an earth based religion, "witchcraft" defines the practice of Wicca or the Craft. Smiley
