Speaking of weather changes:
"Arctic Thaw Opens Northwest Passage
Korean Air to Fly Faster Polar Routes to U.S.
The so-called Northwest Passage (the yellow line in the photo), the shortest route linking Europe with Asia, has opened for the first time with the melting of Arctic ice (the green area in the center), the European Space Agency said on Friday.
Showing satellite images taken early this month, the ESA said that the Arctic ice had shrunk to the lowest level on record since the agency began satellite surveillance in 1978.
Photo released 14 September 2007 by the European Space Agency (ESA) shows an Envisat ASAR mosaic of images of the Arctic Ocean for early September 2007, clearly showing the most direct route of the Northwest Passage open (yellow line) and the Northeast passage only partially blocked (blue line). /AFP
"We have seen the ice-covered area drop to just around 3 million sq.km which is about 1 million sq.km less than the previous minima of 2005 and 2006," said Dr. Leif Toudal Pedersen of the Danish National Space Center.
"There has been a reduction of the ice cover over the last 10 years of about 100,000 sq.km per year on average, so a drop of 1 million sq.km in just one year is extreme," he said.
The Northwest Passage is a shipping lane that starts in the North Atlantic (the lower part of the yellow line), passes the Arctic Ocean of Canada and the coastal sea of Alaska (the upper part of the yellow line), and reaches the Pacific.
Using this route, ships could shorten voyages between the two land masses to a remarkable 16,000 km. Currently navigating from London to Tokyo means ships must travel a distance of 21,000 km to pass through the Suez Canal or 23,000 km to pass through the Panama Canal.
Meanwhile, the Northeast Passage (the blue line in the photo), which goes along the Siberian coast, is still partially closed, the ESA said.
