Where Am I?

« on: November 02, 2007, 01:16:42 AM »

I found this old post on a Canadian/American Pagan site and I thought it was a really interesting read. I really think the world might actually be changing for the better.

Heres the link to the article: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/MARSHALL_PAGANS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

I'm not sure if this applies to my country as well, but I'm sure "most" employers here wouldn't mind. I do think some would though because there is a huge population of Atheist and Anti-Religious people  in my country. I would not be allowed to take a day off for any Religious purpose at my current workplace, because both the owners are very Anti-religious and so are all the employees. At least on my island religion plays a very little role in the day to day lives of people.

I don't see anything like this happening here either. I would say the majority of the population here is Christian and to take a day off for a pagan holiday, would be seen as calling in sick with no doctor excuse. The absence would still be counted towards your sick days count or against vacation you have accumulated. Actually to be honest, if a person would want to take the day off for observation, it would be best to use another reason for the day off around here. Otherwise you may deal with some kind of discrimination. That's sad to say, but it's most likely true. My opinion is the less the people you work with know about you, is sometimes better. I don't get real close to those I work with in an office building anyway, when you tell everyone your life story, it eventually turns into office gossip. I've learned this one from experience. So, when it comes to religion or politics, I don't discuss my beliefs or opinions on those topics in the work place.

I agree Melissa, most businesses and workplaces at least around these parts make you use a personal day. sick day, or a vacation day for any religious holiday there may be more exceptions for Christians like Christmas. In my experience it just seems that work seems to trump religion, people may be very spiritual but they tend to work then practice afterwards.
