Where Am I?

« on: November 22, 2007, 06:11:27 PM »

Now I'm not normally one to rant, at least not online anyway, but I need to get this out. I'm currently attending my first year of University I have a full course load plus an extra online course. This course is an all year History 100 Course, and I have been having troubles with the Professor. He seems alright, he's nice, and shares my passion for history but he has a few qualities which I do not like.

First he changes his expectations of his class so very much. Since I've had him he has changed the due date for essays 4 times! Also he accepts none of the commonly used formats for essays he instead tells you "Put it in a Scholarly format, be creative" well that leaves it very open to interpretation, if he doesn't like your format he sends your essay back to be redone. He is a grammar Nazi and if he sees 5 flaws in the first page regardless if they are minor or not he will send your essay back to be redone without reading another word.

I've looked him up on various sites to find ratings for him and over all out of 10 he scores a 2.2 however I really don't think he is THAT bad... I just think people don't like to work. I have learned a great many things from the people before though such as, I will make a better mark if I do independent study away from his lectures, and the text book.

My biggest problem with him is that 10% of his grad is made up of online chat/discussion I have a severe problem with this because I work the night he does this. I tried to plead with him to change the time or have just discussions with him one on one but he won't. I am missing out on 10% of my years mark because of this.

This just really burns me that I can't find a way around this. *Switches Rant into the off position*

Does he not have to follow an approved curriculum?  10 percent on an on-line chat is a little steep.  But then again the last time I was in school my computer was a Commodore 64.  There must be a dean or another professor that you can approach.

I agree. Requiring online chat is a little steep. I would take this up with the governing body of the school.

I e-mailed the school administration and talked to a few of my professors, and basically I got one answer. "Professors run the show, and 9 times out of 10 the administration can do absolutely nothing to make a professor change their own personal work outlines." So I have little help from my school itself however I am going to try to get the student government involved.

At least your trying and not just taking it. I think it's crap that you have to deal with it. These guys must have forgotten people have to work when they are starting out.

There must be others that are in the same boat.  It blows my mind that people can be so narrow minded at times.

Well I think his philosophy on the matter is that I'm the odd man out, if he changes for me others in the class will be comprised. Half the year is over so I lost a total of 5 points off my final grade because of it.. and if he doesn't change it after xmas I'll loose 5 more.

I don't know what to tell you Nicholas.  His whole philosophy sounds morally and ethically wrong.

I had a meeting with him a few hours ago in the chat room my online course offers. He basically told me he may make some changes next semester for me and that he sympathized for me. However either way I'm still going to be out 3-4 points on my final grade because of this but it is better than 5-10...

Nicholas, I'm glad that you were finally able to talk to him, as well. He does seem like he understands a little better now where your coming from. I'm glad to hear that he is taking less points away  Smiley

This is a tough situation for you. All I can think of is to openly communicate with him on the subject. And all you can do is your best. As long as you know you have done your best you should feel like you did your best to accomplish his goals for the class. Hopefully he will recognise your struggle to complete his tasks and will be more open to change the outline for next semester.
Just focus your energy into a positive outcome and I will do that for you too  Smiley
