Melissa's post gave me an idea for a new thread.  It is a rather straight-forward topic: how much do you believe in ghosts?  If you believe in ghosts at all, how much credit do you give a show like Ghost Hunters?  And finally, what exceptions do you have to any personal rules or beliefs when it comes to ghosts?

Feel free to discuss this in the thread.  Also, please try to be clear on what you personally believe, and what you promote as actual facts.  :-)

Sincerely,

I believe in entities. I have yet to see anything that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that uncle Joe is still hanging around. There are signs which are compelling toward most entities are spirits of the deceased. Just no concrete evidence. Also there are different types of entities and hauntings.

Ghosthunters is a good show. Probably the most realistic paranormal show on TV. But it is still for entertainment. Jay and Grant themselves will tell you that. All you need to do is attend one of their lectures to hear them say it. 100s of hours of footage are edited down for about 50 minutes of television. The fact is 99% of investigations are boring. And what gets investigators excited will usually go unnoticed by the general public. So the edits are made to make the show interesting to everyone. And so far they have been successful. I wish them continuing success.

I do believe in entities as well. I think that life is not over once we die and maybe it's hard to give up your life and move on. So these people still lingere around.

I believe Ghost Hunters is the most factual based show out there. They go in level headed and don't just call anyting that scares them a haunting. They have to have proof and do a great job of ruling out other possibilities.

I don't know to much on entities but I believe they are real. Some are good and others bad. They come in all shapes and smells  Smiley

Also I believe there is a fine line when it comes to hunting them out. You have to really know what you are doing and dealing with.

I do definetly believe in ghosts in a classic definition. I have seen them all my life. But I truly don't think that most have any kind of sentients. I rather think they are more like memories. Recordings of things that happened. Most of the most famous hauntings are these types.

I think that those that show emotions, of any kind, are more likely to fall under the "entity, poltergiest"category.

Thank you for all the responses so far...

The answers to my questions are below. :-D

...how much do you believe in ghosts?

I believe that they -could- be out there, but I am not one who will jump at just any claim that someone makes of seeing a ghost.  So, I guess one could say that I am very spiritual, but I take something that strikes me as superstitious with a healthy level of skepticism.

Considering some of the shows that do exist on the paranormal, I think that the Ghost Hunters - for the most part - have approached the situation as pragmatically as possible.  I have not seen many cases where they have not debunked the myths surrounding haunted locations.

Well, as I stated before, I try to take every case that I 'see' with a healthy level of skepticism.  I do believe that we can sometimes create our own realities by invoking or focusing on enough energy.  But at the same time, that is what it is: someone's own reality.  Rarely do people share the same experience with such a manifestation, if that makes any sense.  It is part of why I am glad there are shows like Ghost Hunters, to at least help people take in that healthy level of skepticism.

More or less, since I believe in God/dess, that dictates me believing in something beyond what is tangible and always explained by science and logic.  However, if I was to believe every claim out there on the supernatural, I would also subject myself to gullibility and the possibility of being manipulated.

I usually try to define what I 'believe' in a different category than what I say is 'absolute.'  That way, I am not trying to impose my personal spirituality (or possible superstitions) on others.

Good posts, everyone!

Sincerely,

I don't doubt the existence of ghosts at all. To me, ghosts are as real as the people walking on the sidewalk.

I would agree with Seraphim, I'd say they go about it pretty well with science. I'm not saying to go off and just believe in anything without trying to prove it first, but there are some things science can't quite explain (in my opinion anyway).
And finally, what exceptions do you have to any personal rules or beliefs when it comes to ghosts?
When debating whether an occurrence was supernatural or not I try to rule out as many physical possibilities as possible by thoroughly examining my surroundings before making any jump conclusions.

Oh I think I believe in ghost. I think of them as residual. Left over from their life before. I personally have not encountered them but believe you me I am constantly looking for the opportunity to do so.
As far as the show I believe there is some truth because of all the other shows that I have seen, this one is the best.

I'd like to say I've come into contact with a few, but I can't necessarily prove to myself or others that I actually have, given the nature of circumstances "haunting about" at the time of experience. I will say, however, that I do believe in such spiritual and/or energetic entities as ghosts. I don't have a perfect explanation as to why they're here, but there's no doubt in my mind that they are.

I'd like to believe that residual memories - or significant memories that remain radiantly intact after death - are largely responsible for the drive and purpose of Ghosts. To me, a ghost seems much too robotic in essence to propose that its sporadic appearances are anything other than unintelligible cycles of physical mimicry.

... So, I DO think they exist! I just don't buy into this whole "I'm communicating with a ghost and it told me to buy it some cheap liquor and dance naked in front of a camp fire in the middle of Alaska while sacrificing the devil's second born hoodlum child under the second full moon of the year of..." kind of make believe stuff.  (Well, if you ever catch me doing something like that, remind me of what I said and I might change my mind!)

Oh, eh, wha? The TV show... I don't think I've seen it. But if I have, I'm sure it was splendid! Sounds like a lot of fun, anyway.
