OK, someone who hasn't gotten enough sleep accidentally deleted a thread we had going on the year 2012.  Roll eyes I'm sorry guys.

So, if you guys want to start the discussion again start here.

Bobby and Raphael were discussing the year 2012 and the Mayan calendar and climate changes.  Please pick up and continue this thread.

I think we are living through a climate change. Recorded weather does not date that far back. Plus with all the other changes in the world it fits. 2012 draws near.

The year 2012 is the end of the Mayan calendar. The Mayans were very accurate with their measurement of time. And at the end of their long count calendar a major change always happened with the world. December 21, 2012 is the very end of the Mayan calendar. It is believed that will be the end of the world. But it could just mark a significant change in the world, not it's destruction. The dawning of a new, more spiritual age.

Scientifically speaking it will be the occurence of a very rare solar/galactic alignment that only happens every 26,000 years. Our sun will be perfectly aligned with the center of the Milky Way galaxy. This alignment may have a great impact on the veil which separates our realm with the realms of paranormal entities. The thinning of this veil could be the cause for the increase in paranormal activity. Including sightings of U.F.O.s, happenings in the Bermuda Triangle, Bigfoot sightings, etc.

A little scary and very exciting too. I have heard of the world having a new change. Not like the Christian's second comming but more of a New Age theory. This having to do with another dimension in space, a place called Zion. Supposedly the Photon Belt is comming down on Earth and connecting a few of the dominations in space with us. People will die and some will live but all in all it is supposed to be a time of peace. We will be with out loved ones that have passed and start a new life in love and peace. So that is what I have read. Yes, I read all sorts of weird things Grin
(Universal Prophacy's by Betty Heacock)
I'm just happy I get to witness ( I hope) the alignment. Scary though  EEK!

I just watched a video not to long ago about this topic. The video also mentions that around 2012, that the magnetic poles will change, from north to south. It went on to say that if it changes too quick, that it will cause a great natural imbalance that will effect all ecosystems.

The following is an article from USA Today.  As stated in the article ( I knew I head read it somewhere) the end of the Myan 5000 year cycle was seen as a celebration in Myan culture.  Not an apocalypse.  It is my personal belief that any disasters will be the result of wide spread panic.  Enjoy.

By G. Jeffrey MacDonald, Special to USA TODAY

With humanity coming up fast on 2012, publishers are helping readers gear up and count down to this mysterious — some even call it apocalyptic — date that ancient Mayan societies were anticipating thousands of years ago.
Since November, at least three new books on 2012 have arrived in mainstream bookstores. A fourth is due this fall. Each arrives in the wake of the 2006 success of 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, which has been selling thousands of copies a month since its release in May and counts more than 40,000 in print. The books also build on popular interest in the Maya, fueled in part by Mel Gibson's December 2006 film about Mayan civilization, Apocalpyto.

Authors disagree about what humankind should expect on Dec. 21, 2012, when the Maya's "Long Count" calendar marks the end of a 5,126-year era.

Journalist Lawrence Joseph forecasts widespread catastrophe in Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation Into Civilization's End. Spiritual healer Andrew Smith predicts a restoration of a "true balance between Divine Feminine and Masculine" in The Revolution of 2012: Vol. 1, The Preparation. In 2012, Daniel Pinchbeck anticipates a "change in the nature of consciousness," assisted by indigenous insights and psychedelic drug use.

The buildup to 2012 echoes excitement and fear expressed on the eve of the new millennium, popularly known as Y2K, though on a smaller scale, says Lynn Garrett, senior religion editor at Publishers Weekly. She says publishers seem to be courting readers who believe humanity is creating its own ecological disasters and desperately needs ancient indigenous wisdom.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: Milky Way | Mayan | Mayan civilization | Mayan language | Florida Museum of Natural History | Civilization
"The convergence I see here is the apocalyptic expectations, if you will, along with the fact that the environment is in the front of many people's minds these days," Garrett says. "Part of the appeal of these earth religions is that notion that we need to reconnect with the Earth in order to save ourselves."

But scholars are bristling at attempts to link the ancient Maya with trends in contemporary spirituality. Maya civilization, known for advanced writing, mathematics and astronomy, flourished for centuries in Mesoamerica, especially between A.D. 300 and 900. Its Long Count calendar, which was discontinued under Spanish colonization, tracks more than 5,000 years, then resets at year zero.

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

Part of the 2012 mystique stems from the stars. On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time," Joseph writes.

But scholars doubt the ancient Maya extrapolated great meaning from anticipating the alignment — if they were even aware of what the configuration would be.

Astronomers generally agree that "it would be impossible the Maya themselves would have known that," says Susan Milbrath, a Maya archaeoastronomer and a curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History. What's more, she says, "we have no record or knowledge that they would think the world would come to an end at that point."

University of Florida anthropologist Susan Gillespie says the 2012 phenomenon comes "from media and from other people making use of the Maya past to fulfill agendas that are really their own."

It seems like different cultures and past civilizations have believed something great was stored for the future around 2012. They all can't be wrong.
Hey Raph I got goosebumps reading your post. it's still an exciting moment in the future to look forward too though.

From what I've seen you have to pick and choose and be careful what you read on the topic.  There seems to be more conspiracy theorists out there than scientists and those that try to mix science into their own theory's.  Some make more sense than others.  I'm a bit of a realist when it comes to "end of the world" stuff and tend to lean a little more toward science than anything else.  and there will be lots of opportunity to read up as the date draws ever nearer.  For now I'm still going to focus on what I love best, my job and my music.  What will be will be and there's no real point in getting all worked up about it.  I feel I am here for a reason and when my destiny is fulfilled then and only then will I move on.

Thanks, I am interested more on the scientific part of this as well as studying the whole alignment theory. I love Astronomy so this will be fun.
I agree we are all here for a purpose and it is up to us to figure out what it is and fulfill it. But we defiantly have to have a little fun at some point  Grin

On The History Channel on Thursday:
Decoding The Past
Episode: Mayan Doomsday Prophecy

The world is coming to an end on December 21, 2012! The ancient Maya made this stunning prediction more than 2,000 years ago. We'll peel back the layers of mystery and examine in detail how the Maya calculated the exact date of doomsday. Journey back to the ancient city of Chichen Itza, the hub of Maya civilization deep in the heart of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, to uncover the truth about this prophecy. The Maya were legendary astronomers and timekeepers--their calendar is more accurate than our own. By tracking the stars and planets they assigned great meaning to astronomical phenomena and made extraordinary predictions based on them--many of which have come true. Could their doomsday prophecy be one of them? In insightful interviews archaeologists, astrologers, and historians speculate on the meaning of the 2012 prophecy. Their answers are as intriguing as the questions.

Last night, I had the pleasure of watching, "Decoding the Past: Doomsday 2012: The End of Days".  This was the first time I had seen this episode though the series itself, 'Decoding the Past', is in reruns.  I must admit, it piqued my interest, so I started talking notes.

Now I admit that I was aware of the Mayan Calender ending in 2012, having taken an interest in the Mayan culture during the times I was doing amatuer studies in archeaology.    The  one book that I found on the subject at my local library at the time was at a master's degree level of college, and me and my 15 year old mind went forget this.

After watching this episode though, it brought that old interest back up.   The show mentioned ten different things that had predicted or possibly predicted the world's end or a world-changing event in the year 2012.    Ten different things.

They are the following:
~Mayan Calendar
~The Sybillian Prophecies
~The Delphi Oracle
~I Ching
~ Mother Shipton's Prophecies
~Merlin Prophecies
~Native American Prophecies from Black Elk of the Sioux and the Hopi Tribe
~ Web-BOT

I'm actually doing an amatuer study into this and posting the results on all of the blogs that I have...which is all of one livejournal and two Myspace.

I can post my findings if nobody minds.

I have noticed a definite increase in paranormal activity. I have talked to others and many have said the same.
I have wondered what was going on to cause this. Interesting theory.

My issue with Google is that sometimes the sites that are listed at the top, are sites that have not been updated in months and the information is old.  Sometimes you have to really dig through some search engines to find more information or different articles and opinions. But that's another topic all to itself. lol

By the way.. I almost forgot that show is on tonight, anyone plan on watching it?

Okay, I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

Next posting on this 2012 subject will be the Delphi Oracle.

~The Sibylline Prophecy and Sibylline Oracles~

Okay first off, so that we're all on the same page, let's take care of a couple of questions first.

The first one being:  What or who is a Sibyl?

"The Sibyl was the name anceint Romans gave to any aged woman who could supposedly foretell the future.  The best known was the Cumaean Sibyl.  According to mythology, the god Apollo promised that she would live one year for each grain of sand she could hold in her hands.  But Apollo did not give her eternal youth, and she continued to age.
Sibyl guided Aeneas, the Trojan warrior, to the lower world to learn the future of Rome.  Later she offered to sell nine books of prophecy, called the Sibylline Books, for a high price to a king of Rome.
When he refused, Sibyl burned six of the books.  He finally paid the original price for only three.  There books were consulted in times of danger.  They were destroyed by fire in 83 B.C. "
--World Book Encyclopedia Vol. 17, 1993 Edition.

Okay so not only could a Sibyl be your grandmother, she was the weird mean one too.

"The word Sibyl comes (via Latin) from the Greek word sibylla, meaning Prophetess. Earlier...seeresses...'are known only through legend.'  Later...sibyls wandered from place to place."
"The first Greek writer to mention a sibyl, as far as we know, was Heraclitus, in the fifth century BC.  The Sibyl, with frenzied mouth uttering things not to be laughed at, unadorned and unperfumed, yet reaches to a thousand years with her voice by aid of the god.' (Heraclitus, fragment 12)"

There were numerous Sibyls.   Most of whom were wanderers.  No source that I've found has stated whether or not such a position was hereditary or if such women were chosen by accident or fate.  Most where never really associated with a specific deity either, leading to a further speculation that many of these were truly pyshic, however that is pushing the
envelope a bit farther than I can research.

Now it's time for the second question:  What is the difference between the Sibylline Prophecies and the Sibylline Oracles?  Is there one?

"Because of the vogue enjoyed by these heathen oracles and because of the influence they had in shaping the religious views of the period, the Hellenistic Jews in Alexandria, during the second century B.C. composed verses in the same form, attributing them to the sibyls, and circulated them among the pagans as a means of diffusing Judaistic doctrines and
teaching. This custom was continued down into Christian times, and was borrowed by some Christians so that in the second or third c
