It would seem that giant sea spiders the size of dinner plates have been discovered in the Antarctic sea. A research fleet from Australia discovered them 1000 meters down. Here is a link to the full article which includes a video of the critters.

I'm glad you decided to post this Bobby, I had been reading articles about these Antarctic sea creatures all day. It is amazing how many beautiful and strange species that have been discovered in those depths. I also find it fascinating that so many of these creatures in this area have "gigantism". If anyone else is interested take a look at the National Geographic website, there is an underwater video of this exploration as some other pictures.

I also find this area of study fascinating. I figured no one had posted anything yet so I would. It is indeed amazing the size of the animals which dwell at those depths.

I saw this yesterday. What an amazing creature.
I bet there is so much life down there that we haven't even touched the surface!

I love deep sea life, very cool.
At least these are not as creepy looking and I won't feel like something is crawling up my back *Shudders*
Got to live with them though Wink

I am assuming pun intended. Smiley And I agree, we have no clue what all is down there. The giant squid is a great example. Thought a myth of sailors till one finally washed up on shore.

HAHA I thought of that as I pressed post!!
That would be an awesome job. I would dread the cold weather but to actually find something never seen before would out weigh the freezing wind and water.

Ha I was just thinking about the Giant Squid! I saw the National Geographic special where they finally caught a glimpse of one underwater. Up until then they only found them washed upon the shore.

There is no telling what else is down there.

Do you guys know cosmetic companies are researching the lighting properties of deep sea creatures to try and duplicate it for use in the beauty industry. Think ever changing hair color at will.
